Baby Lucas Arrives!
I was thinking to myself what would my first posting be in this blog. It should be something that is very significant and symbolize the start of something that is both exciting and yet nostalgic. I couldn’t think of anything better than to announce the birth of my first son, Lucas.
It was the 25th of September 2007 and my wife was now 39 weeks pregnant. We had our regular checkup with our doctor and figured that we could wait till 1st October which is our baby’s actual due date to have him delivered. Unfortunately things did not go our way and the doctor mention that my wife’s water bag was at a dangerous level and therefore the baby have to come out today. We were told to check in again at 3pm for them to start observation and induce birth as soon as possible.
We got home, took whatever we needed to take and informed our respective bosses that we would not be coming in for work. At 3pm we were at the hospital and my wife was immediately sent to the labour room for monitoring. My parents came to visit and said a prayer for her before they left. While she lay on her comfy bed, I was left with nothing to do but wait. Good thing I brought a lot of reading material with me to pass time.

My parents saying a prayer for my wife

Still smiling while having her IV needle inserted

Ouch!

Watch out Spiderman! I too can shoot web out of my hands soon
At 7pm, my wife was still lying there happily with no labour pain and baby’s heart was still beating strongly. Her sisters came to visit so I could go home to take a shower and dinner before coming back to the hospital. When I got back to the hospital, she was already out of the labour room and in her own boarding room resting. Another scan would be done later at 11pm so we had to wait.

Mmm… hospital food doesn’t look that bad

Time to enjoy my dinner!

My wife and her sister, still happy go lucky
Before 11pm arrived, my wife was complaining of sharp pains and wanted to do the scan earlier and get some painkiller as soon as possible. The nurse was called and they found out that she was 5cm dilated. Our doctor was called in to prepare for the delivery. At 12.30am the waterbag was burst and my wife was given drips to induce labour.
That was when the real pain started. I could see she was in deep pain but I could not do anything but to hold her hands. Some painkiller was given to her as well as some gas for her to inhale to relieve her pain. This continued till 2 am and I saw that this was going to last quite a long time. I told the nurse to get the anesthesiologist to come and give her the epidural to relieve the pain.

The real pain started
The nurse told me to wait a bit longer since she would be delivering soon and I could save some money. I told her that it’s not the money that is important now, I can’t watch my wife in pain and not do anything about it. So she called the anesthesiologist at about 2.30am. Our Baby’s heartbeat was being monitored the whole time and at about 3.20am there was a slight drop in his heartbeat and the doctor recommended that we not wait for natural birth.

The Doctor (in blue) getting my wife’s signature to go ahead with the c-section
I told the doctor to go ahead with the C-section as it would be faster that way. At 3.30 am she was wheeled into the operating theatre. I was not allowed into the operating theatre and so I headed back to the room to sleep awhile. At 4.30 am I was awaken and my wife was wheeled into the room. She looked sedated and tired but very peaceful and free of pain.

Peacefully sleeping after the operation
The nurse told me that our baby was in the baby room. I headed there feeling both excited and scared. Excited because I have been waiting for 9 months to see how he really looks like and scared because I realized that I am a father now and there is another life that I have to take responsibility of when I have only started to learn how to take care of myself and my wife.
I peered through the glass window and I found like 6 babies there. I thought my baby would be the easiest to find since he would have the most hair (My wife and I had lots of hair when we were just born) but surprisingly all the babies there had a full head of hair. Thankfully there were little cards stuck to each of the baby’s “cot” indicating their mother’s name. One of the card have not been filled with a name but the rest had unfamiliar names on them so I guess as much that the baby is my son.

The nursery window
There was an overwhelming joy that flooded me when I saw him laying there with his tiny little hands, tiny little legs and tiny little everything. He is truly a miracle from God. He laid there wrapped up like a cocoon with only his head peering through and without a care in the world. His fragile look make me want to protect him, care for him and hurt anyone that dare lay a finger on him (okay that may be a bit too violent but you get what I mean). It was definitely the happiest moment in my life.

His first big yawn!
And now I can tell him this:

Said wife is not gonna do buns and cherry red lips. Said wife also doesn’t like those photos of hers. It almost look like said wife was on her death bed, with people hovering over her and praying no less!
Lucas wants more pics of him posted too, he is so much nicer to look at and read about. *hint*hint*
